Partners in Conservation

There are many entities and people around Zimbabwe that are doing incredible amounts of work for Conservation as a whole. The Z.P.G.A. have partnered with many during the last 12 months and we would like to say thank you for all you do!

Birdlife

BirdLife Zimbabwe was founded in 1951 as the Rhodesian Ornithological Society (ROS) and became a full member in BirdLife International (BLI) in April 2002. BLI is a global partnership of 120 membership-based organisations that have a common interest in the conservation of birds and biodiversity. Our UK partner, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) assists us with core funding.

Our fundamental purpose is to promote the survival of bird life in Zimbabwe and elsewhere for its intrinsic value and the enjoyment of future generations. Our strategic objectives are centered on species, sites/habitats, people and sustainability.

BirdLife Zimbabwe own their headquarters based in Harare thanks to a generous donation from our partner in the Netherlands, Vogelbescherming Nederland. The BLZ Council is responsible for the smooth running of the organisation and holds regular meetings. Outings, evening meetings, surveys and citizen science projects are organised by the branches. Conservation donor funded projects are undertaken by the staff.

The Conservation and Wildlife Fund (CWF)

The Conservation and Wildlife Fund (CWF) is a non-profit trust which was formed after conservationists and stakeholders in the region of HNP decided to combine forces to address important conservation issues affecting the area: the people, the wildlife and their habitats. CWF started work on the ground late in 2017. The founding members were five photographic safari companies (African Bush Camps, Amalinda Collection, Hideaways, Imvelo Safari Lodges and The Hide) and five conservation organisations: Painted Dog Conservation (PDC), WildCRU’s Hwange Lion Research, Panthera, WCN’s Lion Recovery Fund and Southern African Conservation Trust (SACT).

CWF works in the land bordering the eastern boundary of HNP. The project area currently covers about 4,300 km2 and comprises national forests, communal areas and privately owned ranches – all home to a wide variety of wildlife species.

CWF supports the state institutions which have the mandate to protect the fauna and flora as well as other conservation initiatives in the area, including established research organisations.

Friends of Hwange Trust

Friends of Hwange was formed on the back of the extreme drought of 2005 that severely affected Hwange National Park. The National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority of Zimbabwe, plagued by lack of funding and a decrease in tourist arrivals, did not have the funds to keep enough borehole pumps going. As a result, only a handful of waterholes had water and countless animals died.

Hwange National Park has very little natural surface water during the dry months of the year. Most of the water has to be pumped from underground sources to surface pans so that the wildlife can drink.

Guides Against Poaching

The idea of G.A.P. was conceived as a way for members of the Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association (Z.P.G.A.) to give back to wildlife conservation and at the same time spend time in the outdoors that they love.  The ongoing COVID pandemic has exacerbated the need for such a concept. With no clients in both the consumptive and non-consumptive sectors there is little in the way of revenue and funding for conservation and protection of our most valuable and fragile of resources, our wildlife and the wild spaces in which the wildlife exists and depends upon for its survival.

It was also very apparent that the Z.P.G.A. had highly qualified, knowledgeable and passionate guides all around Zimbabwe that were not working and were desperate to get back into the field. G.A.P. needed to find a way to fund and staff G.A.P. without disrupting already established Anti-Poaching Units (A.P.U.’s).

The Mother africa trust

The Mother Africa Trust began in 2006 and has worked tirelessly to make a positive and lasting difference in Zimbabwe.

The Mother Africa trustees have always believed that one person really can make a difference.  Like natures development, change is often a gradual and quiet process, and we believe that through some collective care and nurture, the face of this resilient country can alter steadily and sustainably forever…

Today, The Mother Africa Trust dream is an active reality and the Trust continues to go from strength to strength whilst seeking out new opportunities to grow and improve.

Take Action

Take Action Zimbabwe encompasses the Take Action Trust which is a unit of highly trained canines and handlers that combat poaching and wildlife crime in the country. The team helps existing anti-poaching units by bringing in the unique skills that the canines have at being able to find and arrest poachers. The unit is supported by the funds generated from the volunteer and intern programs offered by Take Action Zimbabwe and in that way are able to assist without having to draw from the already strained budgets of the other anti-poaching units.

The Zambesia Conservation Alliance

The Zambesia Conservation Alliance (ZCA) exists to drive awareness through creative and impactful movements that directly connect to conservation. We’re here to provide a platform for the voices and efforts of those tirelessly working for wildlife on the ground in Africa.

It is our hope that these movements will directly and profoundly benefit those on the front-line championing conservation here in Africa. As their needs are increasingly more real than ever, so is their need for enhanced supporters, allies and patrons.

Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit

The Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of our local wildlife and natural resources.

Surrounded by the Victoria Falls National Park, the town of Victoria Falls is located in one of the most beautiful environments on earth, with unspoiled expanses of wilderness, abundant wildlife and spectacular settings, drawing tourists from around the world.

However, the beauty of the location comes with some heavy burdens of human and animal conflict. VFAPU tries to ease some of the burdens by protecting the wildlife and habitat from poacher pressure (subsistence and commercial), as well rescuing and rehabilitating animals injured by human interference. Additionally, we do all we can to train ex-poachers in new skills so they find alternative avenues of revenue creation to give them a sustainable income without doing harm to flora and fauna. Education is also important, and VFAPU and its partners try to reach children at an early age through school and community awareness programs.

Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit

The Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust is based in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in the Victoria Falls National Park. We are located in the center of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) which is world’s largest trans-frontier conservation area comprising 5 countries and 520,000 km2 of protected parks and forests, game and wildlife management areas and communities.

Our operational base is situated near The Elephant Camp, on the Wild Horizons Sanctuary, just a few kilometers out of Victoria Falls town.

Dambari Wildlife Trust

Dambari Wildlife Trust (DWT) is a non-profit conservation and research organisation that has been active since 1997. The Trust’s “Conservation Across Boundaries” programme focuses on the Matobo Hills World Heritage Site. Wildlife research and conservation, environmental education and natural resource management, both within the Matobo National Park and in the surrounding communal and resettlement areas, are primary activities.

The importance of collaboration in conservation work cannot be overstated. DWT is pleased to be able to work with a broad range of organisations nationally, regionally and worldwide
