Tree planting Challenge

In the beginning of 2020 the Zimbabwean Professional Guides Association (Z.P.G.A.) initiated a project whereby we encouraged schools around the Country to have their first year students plant trees. A new decade and a new era in global environmental awareness, little did we know COVID19 would shut all the schools down!! Most, if not all our schools have now reopened, however, the Association would like to roll out this initiative to all significant influencers to drive the tree planting challenge  and hence our appeal to you.

For consideration, a solar panel that is installed at water holes or on free standing frames requires that all vegetation is removed from around the site, enabling full sunlight to penetrate the panels. But, this involves the removal of any saplings growing in or around the solar panel……understandably. By adopting an alternative site, one can replant the saplings removed, thus replacing the denuded carbon foot print.

The Z.P.G.A. in 2018 embarked on an associated project where we named and tagged trees in seven schools across the country which has been a huge success and of benefit to the participating schools. To start off, and as a pilot project, the Grade One class of Victoria Falls Primary planted a tree for each pupil. The idea being that each Grade One pupil plants and nurtures that tree, for the next seven years (Grade One to Grade Seven).   By then the tree should be big enough to take care of itself.

The chosen tree for VF Primary is the Natal Mahogany, because of its shade value, and suitability for our climate. Consideration was given to:

  • The saplings
  • The holes, soil and manure
  • A protective fence/barrier
  • A small plaque with each student’s name
  • A larger plaque saying “Trees of the Class of 2020”

As with the Tree Tagging exercise we would like the Tree Planting project to roll out across the country, and not only in schools.  Therefore I would like to encourage all schools, not only to focus on its own first year students, but also to adopt a less privileged school and assist them in planting a tree for every first year student. This could be a community social investment initiative for your school, club or company.

Please consider supporting this challenge, and nominating another school / company / club, to meet, or beat your plants.

Join us in our efforts across the country to combat deforestation, before it is too late, and our eco climate is changed irrevocably.  Please post your planting on social media, accompanied with #WePlantedDidYou?
